James Bond is the son of Andrew Bond a Scot of Glencoe. His mother was Monique Delacroix a Swiss. Both his parents were killed in an accident in the Aiguilles Rogues when he was eleven years old. James had travelled extensively with his parents and by this time was fluent in both French and German.
He went to live with his erudite and accomplished aunt Miss Charmian Bond at Pett Bottom, near Canterbury, Kent. She sent him to Eton but his aunt was asked to remove him after only a short time when some "alleged" troubles with one of his maids came to light; he was twelve at the time. He then went to Fettes College, Edinburgh. After this he briefly attended the University of Geneva. It is interesting to note that the author Ian Fleming also attended these same schools.
In 1941 he joined the Royal Naval Reserve. He served throughout the Second World War and left the Royal Navy in 1945 with the rank of Commander.
James Bond, who was given a 00 prefix to his agent number 7, (the 'double-oh' prefix indicates his discretionary licence to kill in the performance of his duties) undertook his first missions in 1946 (as recounted in Casino Royale 1953.)
There have been numerous short stories and books written about this agent’s activities. Ian Fleming first brought Bond to the wider audience. He named 007 after an American ornithologist James Bond (author of Birds of the West Indies) and the character's early exploits were based partly on the true activities of an actual British agent Lieutenant Commander Patrick Dalzel. After Fleming’s death further adventures have been written by Kingsley Amis, John Pearson, John Gardner, Raymond Benson and Chalie Higson. The Ian Fleming books are:
